Beedell broth­ers take top two places at Her­bert’s Hole

THERE was a suc­cess­ful home­com­ing for the Beedell broth­ers at Sun­day’s 23rd Her­bert’s Hole Chal­lenge.

Si­mon and Tom Beedell, both for­mer Che­sham res­i­dents, re­turned to the town to take part in the event, hosted by Chiltern Har­ri­ers.

And the sib­lings, who now com­pete for Wood­ford Green AC, fin­ished within sec­onds of each other to claim first and sec­ond places in 38.28 and 38.30 re­spec­tively.

They were among 270 run­ners who took to the start­ing line then rac­ing up the hill in Lown­des Park, be­fore leav­ing for a cir­cuit around part of the Ped­nor Val­ley and along Her­bert’s Hole. Con­di­tions were per­fect for cross coun­try run­ning de­spite the pre­vi­ous day’s wet weather, and very good times were recorded by a high class field, with run­ners com­ing from far and wide.

Fol­low­ing the Beedells in was James Sil­vey, who took third place with a time of 39.07, while in the women’s com­pe­ti­tion, Gemma Bi­taraf of Gade Val­ley Har­ri­ers was vic­to­ri­ous with 46.04 and she was joined on the podium by An­gela Trusser of Wat­ford Har­ri­ers and Mairead O’Rourke of Morn­ing­ton Chasers (47.19 and 47.46, re­spec­tively).

The host club took sec­ond place in both the men’s and women’s team com­pe­ti­tions, with Gade Val­ley Har­ri­ers beat­ing them both times.

In­di­vid­ual prize win­ners in the age cat­e­gories went to: VM40 – An­drew Reeves, Ser­pen­tine Run­ning Club, 40.17; VM50 – Paul Allen, Tring Run­ning Club, 43.20; VM60 – Stu­art McGowan, Bike & Run, 52.05; Ju­nior Men – Ben Mitchell, 51.38; VW35 – Ali Young, Chiltern Har­ri­ers, 48.12; VW55 – Lynda Hem­bury, Tring Run­ning Club, 49.59; and F45, Claire McDon­nell, Gade Val­ley Har­ri­ers, 50.30.

Chiltern’s Kate Loach (VW45) and Michael Tur­ney (VM50) were both sec­ond in their age cat­e­gories.
