Engi­neer­ing great fu­tures

TWO pupils at Bea­cons­field High School are cel­e­brat­ing af­ter suc­cess­fully achiev­ing an engi­neer­ing schol­ar­ship.

Year 12 stu­dents Martha Stevens and Phillippa Nunn ap­plied for the Ark­wright Schol­ar­ship in Engi­neer­ing at the end of last year, hav­ing com­pleted a GCSE in prod­uct de­sign and re­sis­tant ma­te­ri­als.

They were in­spired to pursue an in­ter­est in engi­neer­ing and went through a lengthy ap­pli­ca­tion process in­clud­ing and an exam and in­ter­view.

The pair’s achieve­ments were cel­e­brated ear­lier this month at the Ark­wright Cer­e­mony in Lon­don, and the stu­dents will ben­e­fit from a direct link with an engi­neer­ing com­pany.

Martha has been spon­sored by the UK branch of the firm Siemens, and said: “It has been fan­tas­tic learn­ing more about ev­ery­thing Siemens do since I was paired with them in late Au­gust.

“Af­ter meet­ing my men­tors and other rep­re­sen­ta­tives from Siemens dur­ing half term, I am in the process of ar­rang­ing var­i­ous site vis­its and ex­pe­ri­ences that should help me to strengthen my knowl­edge and in­ter­est in engi­neer­ing.”

She added: “Al­ready the ad­vice that Siemens rep­re­sen­ta­tives have given to me and the op­por­tu­ni­ties they have pre­sented me with have been out­stand­ing; I’m really look­ing for­ward to the next two years of my spon­sor­ship with this fan­tas­tic com­pany.”
