WORKERS across Bucks are being urged to go the extra mile this year for their office Christmas lunch - by taking a long healthy walk before their parties.

Leap, the Sport and Activity Partnership for Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes, is calling on businesses to encourage staff to have an active theme for this year’s festive celebrations.

It is all part of the Workplace Challenge initiative, a national scheme to boost health and increase productivity at the same time.

Senior development manager at Leap Chris Gregory said: “Most office workers spend more than six hours a day sitting down at their desks and all the evidence shows that this is simply not healthy.

“In addition, it’s not good for companies either because research shows that not taking a lunch break makes us less productive. Working flat out through the day makes you sluggish and slows down your output.”

He added: “We have challenged firms and their workers all year to take an active midday break, but now we are also hoping they will remember the message when it comes to their festive lunch. Many of them will be eating and drinking all afternoon, so why not build in an active element to the celebrations beforehand by all going for a walk or a trip to the leisure centre? It’s worth trying to find the time because I am convinced it will make the lunch that follows all the more satisfying.”
