Stormy weekend brings change to top of the table
THE effects of Storm Desmond meant just four games started in the Chesham Sunday League this week – and one of those was later abandoned.
Pioneer Reserves’ Division One match with Chesham Athletic was locked at 1-1 when a serious injury left the referee no option but to bring the game to a premature halt, but the two Premier Division fixtures to survive the weather brought significant changes to the top of the table.
A hat-trick from Tom Kaill was only enough for a 4-4 draw for morning leaders Chalfont Saints at home to Maclay FC, who had their own treblescoring hero in the shape of Brad Turner. Wilf Whitaker scored the visitors’ other goal from the spot, while Connor Cumber was also on the mark for the hosts.
Saints’ slip up gave two of the chasers, Magpies 91 and Pioneer, the chance to close in when they met at Westwood Park.
It was Clifford Ryan’s double, plus one for Andy Viney, which saw Pioneer bag the points to go level with Saints at the summit.
The day’s other action came in the League Cup first round, where visitors Dinamo Chequers beat hosts SFG Stones 3-1.
Jon Martin, Kyle Glaser and George Buckthorpe were the men on target for Dinamo, meaning Martin White’s effort for Stones proved a mere consolation.
