Special deliveries are double delight
A COUNCILLOR of 26 years was in shock to find out she received a new year’s honour on the same day she welcomed a new grandchild into the world.
Linda Smith, Chalfont St Peter Parish Council chairman and Chiltern District Council for Chalfont Common ward, has been recognised with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to local government and the community.
Mrs Smith – who has been a district councillor since 1989 – said she was both honoured and surprised to receive the award, but did not fully recognise the implications of the letter on her doormat, having been at the hospital since the early hours of that morning.
She said: “I’m very honoured. To be quite honest the letter came on the day that my daughter had her baby, and so I was up at four in the morning and I got home about half past 10 that night to find the letter on the doormat.
“I was half asleep and I didn’t really look at the envelope. It was totally, totally lovely, and a complete surprise so for me that really capped a lovely day.”
Speaking about the honour Mrs Smith said: “I’m very honoured to receive it – I’ve always enjoyed the work I’ve done on the district and parish councils.
“I’ve done it for 26 years and I really don’t know where all those years have gone, and along the way I’ve met some lovely people and made some lovely friends.”
