Specs designer has his eye on marathon fundraising efforts

Grandad to take part in 90km run in South Africa to boost funds for AIDS charity

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - NEWS -

The Comrades Marathon will take place in South Africa and Will Luff of Seer Green, a father of four and grandfather of three, will compete in the grueling 56 mile race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

He is set to raise money for the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust located along the route.

Mr Luff has designed glasses for films such as Harry Potter, James Bond and the BFG, and will also make a gift of 50 pairs of reading spectacles to grandmothers living close to the marathon route, many of whom care for orphaned grandchildren.

In preparation for the big event, Mr Luff has to complete more than 100 miles of training each month and could lose almost a stone in weight in addition to battling blisters and the effects of blazing heat during the race itself.

He said: “The Comrades is not only the world’s oldest ultra-marathon, but also the largest.

“It takes loads of will power to race 90km in the African heat, so running for a charity like the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust gives me the incentive to keep on going when the going gets tough.

“HACT works right at the centre of the world’s HIV/ AIDS pandemic and when I saw their projects last year, I was so moved that I wanted to give back in some way.

“The funds will go towards HACT’s Respite Unit which treats end stage AIDS patients and support groups for grannies and children affected by HIV and AIDS.”

Olivia Myeza, CEO of HACT said: “We are delighted that Will has chosen to use this opportunity to raise funds and awareness for Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust.

“International support and competitions like the Comrades can help to reduce stigma and raise awareness about HIV/ AIDS.

“We are living in a province where just over one in three people are HIV positive, so we are so grateful for any help we receive to continue our work.”

Mr Luff has been running since he was at school, and one of his sons Matt will also be competing in the race.
