‘We just need to keep on winning to claim the title’
KEEP winning and the title is ours – that was the message from Greg Causer to his Gerrards Cross Hockey Club team-mates this week.
The Cross negotiated what proved to be a tricky tie against bottom club Oxford 5s to stay four points clear at the top of MBBO Division Three, having played a game more than second-plaved Harrow.
The end game is in sight now, but the Cross know they cannot afford to drop any points, starting at home to Wokingham 2s on Saturday.
They started brightly at Oxford and took the lead through Raj Tiwana following a scramble in the D, and although the hosts pulled a goal back, Henry White converted a short corner just before half-time to give Cross the lead.
Another well-worked short corner, after the break saw Causer strke home past the diving keeper, but Oxford pulled back a bizarre goal following a mix-up between Rob Heathcote and Nivraj Jassar, when the ball appeared to be going out of play.
But the best move of the day saw the Cross extend their lead, Jamie Gardener defying a hangover to sprint down the right and cross for Causer to bag his second, before Mike Thompson completed the scoring.
Causer said: “We should have had more goals, but with three more points recorded, and only five games left, we remain top of the division and just need to keep winning.”
Meanwhile, it was a painful day for ladies team skipper Sarah Mounsey, who was left with a bruised wrist after being struck hard by a short corner.
But she will have been cheered up on the sidelines by Kirsty Craig’s twogoal display, which helped secure a 3-1 win over Abingdon Ladies in Trysports Division One. They host Oxford Ladies 4s this Saturday.
