Woolley’s winner a winter warmer for Denham’s U14s
CUP glory still beckons for Denham Ladies U14s thanks to Courtney Woolley’s late winner against Tottenham on Sunday.
Woolley got the last touch to a goalmouth scramble with just two minutes left to book Denham’s place in the last eight of the Middlesex Cup, the winner coming only moments after their north London opponents had drawn level.
This was quite a scalp for boss Leigh Barlow’s young side against a Tottenham team who play a year higher in the Essex League.
Denham dominated the first half, playing quick passing football to stretch their opponents, but despite this the game was goalless at the break.
It was Naomi Hickey, who provided the inspiration soon after the restart, her driving run down the left ending with a low shot into the corner to break the deadlock and give Denham the lead.
A composed performance at the back from Amy Holdcroft, coupled with several outstanding saves from player of the match, goalkeeper Chloe Dawson, helped preserve the slender lead until, with just four minutes remaining, Tottenham drew level.
Extra time appeared to beckon, but skipper Holly Symons rallied the troops for one last attack and when the ball came into the box Woolley grabbed her moment to be a hero by poking the ball home to cue the celebrations.
Meanwhile, in league action, Tara Jhawer’s second-half double clinched a 2-0 win for Denham’s U12s against Enfield.
