Rookie jockey saddles up for Macmillan
Dauntless Siobhan will ride in front of TV cameras at York Racecourse
Siobhan Carey, from Chalfont St Giles, is set to take part in the Macmillan Charity Race at York Racecourse on Saturday June 11 for the first time ever.
The 34-year-old, who lives on Kings Close, said she has been brought up around horses ‘all her life’ but has never taken on the ‘new and daunting’ challenge of a flat race.
She said: “I’m always up for a challenge. I did Kilimanjaro two years ago – I wanted to do a challenge that’s a bit out there so I thought, I might as well go for it.
A manager of Careys Foundation – which aims to raise funds and provide support to UK and Ireland based charities – Ms Carey has only ever been a leisure rider of horses.
Flat racing, she said, is a completely different task and has meant she has had to completely change her diet and training.
She said: “I’ve had a few falls but you have just got to get back on. I’ve been out since Decemebr so I’m quite tired.”
More than £450,000 was raised for Macmillan last year at the race, and as the only person selected from the south Ms Carey says she wants to all she can for it.
And 350,000 people will be watching on TV, to join the 28,000 people who will be at the race.
She said: “I don’t want to show myself up. I only found that out after I got the spot.”
The rider is being trained by Sarah Bosley, former two time Lady Amateur Flat Champion of Martin Bosley Racing.
She said she is looking forward to it, but admitted there are nights when she thinks about ‘ oh my God what have I done’.
She added: “But you think about Macmillan, you think about what they do – it just makes it all worthwhile.”
Speaking about the reaction this has had from friends and family she said: “They’re supportive. I think some of them think I’m slightly mad and it’s a bit of a phase, but I’m in right to the very end.
“I’m not the sort of person to back out of anything – if I’m going to do it, I’m going to give it 100 percent and achieve that goal. If I can raise over £10,000 that would be amazing.”
