‘I’ll make sure Sellers keeps his levels up’

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - NEWS -

GARETH Ainsworth has promised Ryan Sellers he will not let him fall down the cracks in the pavement of professional football.

The former Bolton youngster joined Wycombe last summer, but despite some impressive pre-season performances, has only gone on to make 14 appearances, his only start coming in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

His biggest opportunity so far came against Mansfield on Good Friday when he replaced the injured Sam Woods just eight minutes in and got the nearest he has yet managed to 90 minutes under his belt.

However, the 21-year-old leftwinger was back on the bench when Wycombe travelled up to Notts County.

Manager Ainsworth said: “Ryan will improve. He’s not had a lot of minutes lately, and that’s something I spoke to Ryan about this week – trusting him and putting him in the team when the opportunity arises. He’s always around the ball, young and willing, and wants to learn and play for this club. It’s tough for a young lad to come in and play the way I want us to play, especially coming into a league team which wants results every Saturday.

“Ryan’s been a left back all his career, but I think he’s a winger and changed him into one. I think he’s bettter going forward than defending. He’s got pace, puts a good cross in, wins headers and has got a goal in him, which are all attributes for a left back rather than a winger.

“That’s a big change for a young man to have on his shoulders, and we’re a long way off the finished article, but we’ve got all the raw tools to work with.

“I will be working hard with him to make sure he keeps the performance levels up and doesn’t fall by the wayside. He’ll learn. It’s all about taking your opportunities and learning fast. I’m sure Ryan will be pleased to have got some minutes under his belt, and I’m sure we’ll see more of him with Sam Wood out for a few weeks.”
