England veteran Stafford smashes century for Bucks
BEACONSFIELD’S England 60+ cricket international Mike Stafford enjoyed a fine debut for Bucks Over60s – smashing a century against Shropshire.
The clash at High Wycombe CC saw Bucks get life in the Seevent Over-60s County Cricket Championship West Midlands group under way, after being moved over from the south group this summer.
Under new captain Dave Brooker, of Princess Risborough CC, Bucks elected to bat on what looked to be an excellent batting track, and although Dick de Caris fell early, this brought together Stafford with fellow debutant Keith Wallis, of High Wycombe CC.
The duo soon took a liking to the Shropshire bowling and treated the crowd to a superb display of classy stroke play, Wallis scoring 143 and Stafford 101 as they built an incredible second wicket partnership of 224.
This helped Bucks finished on 2743 off their 45 overs, but Shropshire did not hold back in the mammoth run chase, and with Andrew Clarke (57) and John Foster (60) at the wicket they were up with the run rate.
However, when those two were dismissed, the chase petered out and Shropshire could only manage 232-8 off their 45 overs. Chenies & Latimer CC duo Chris Lowe (3-42) and Brian Shipley (3-46) were the best Bucks wicket takers.
The second XI, meanwhile, have yet to start their season, with two matches being rained off, but were hoping to get under way with an away match against a tough Surrey side at Banstead CC yesterday.
