Lions claw their way back to take trophy
CHALFONT Saints U12s Lions came from behind to pull off an upset and win the Thames Valley Football Development League Cup.
The Division Two side were up against Division One champions Delaford Colts so knew they would be in for a tough time – and so it proved when Delaford took the lead after just five minutes, before hitting the post and having another shot cleared off the line by James Berry.
Chalfont equalised Nathan Marshall, but through when Delaford took the lead again just before half time to go in 2-1 up at the break, it looked like there was only going to be one winner.
The Lions had other ideas though and roared back within five minutes of the second half when Kieran Reynolds converted from a cross to level matters, before Jude O’Connor put them in front for the first time shortly after.
With around 10 minutes to go, Delaford started throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser, but the Lions caught them on the break, with Archie Bowern firing in a shot which was saved, but Ollie Rooks gobbled up the rebound to make it 4-2.
All 14 boys in the squad played a part on the pitch, while manager Lee Bowern believes it is the first time a Saints team has won this cup since the club was formed almost 30 years ago.
The squad was Luca Silva, Keara Miller, Alfie Thompson, Andreas Bazigos, James Berry, Jake Frost, Zac Young, Archie Bowern, Jude O’Connor, Nathan Marshall, Liam Cini, Josh Biggerstaff, Kieran Reynolds and Oliver Rooks.
