Boost for athletes

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - NEWS -

MORE than 40 athletes from Chiltern will benefit from a UK wide £1.2million fund – thanks to a charitable social enterprise.

The athletes will be supported through the GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), the largest independent athlete talent programme in the UK, run with SportsAid and Chiltern District Council.

With the Rio Olympics and Paralympics near, many of the GSF supported athletes will use their awards to assist in preparation for the Games.

There is one supported Chiltern athlete focused on qualification for Rio 2016 and due to the number of young athletes on the programme there are significantly more who are targeting the 2020 and 2024 Games.

GSF Patron and former Olympic champion Sally Gunnell said: “It’s vitally important that we inspire young people to excel in sport and harness their talent towards future Games. From starting out as a young athlete and progressing through my sport, I know support through development years is crucial.”

GLL Sport Foundation chair Peter Bundey congratulated the athletes saying: “We know first hand the commitment, effort and sacrifices they are making to harness their talent.”
