Newton shakes off successive ducks as Hill get draw
MORRANT CHILTERNS CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION FOUR Amersham Hill 2nds ...............................185-9 dec Pinner 2nds .................................................... 86-6 Match drawn DAN Newton finally got his batting back on track as Amersham Hill 2nds grabbed a winning draw against Pinner 2nds to move above them in the table on Saturday.
Amersham, who were put into bat on a very green wicket, have had problems with losing early wickets this season, with prolific scorer Newton coming into the match on the back of two successive ducks.
However, reunited with Ron Hedley as his opening partner, the pair batted well and took the opening stand to 52 before Newton was out for 25.
Hedley soon after went for 26 as a bowling change saw the wickets start to tumble, but just as Amersham started with a 50 partnership, they ended with one too as the last pair – Chris Tucker (17no) and Rahul Mall (30no) – took them to 185-9 declared off 47 overs. Rain then interrupted play for some time and when the play restarted it left Pinner with 31 overs to reach 186 for victory.
Against excellent bowling from Newton and Tucker, the target was never on and Pinner finished on 86-6, with Newton grabbing two wickets and one each for Tucker, Anurag Abinashi, Rahul Mall and Gareth Ashton.
Not many other matches in the league survived the rain, but last year’s Division Four champions, Winchmore Hill, continued their 100 per cent start to life in Division Three, beating Holyport 2nds by seven wickets to stay top of the table.
The Lee remain bottom following their rain-affected draw with Little Marlow, while Great Kingshill, relegated from Division One last season, continue to struggle in Division Two and are still yet to win after losing to Wraysbury 2nds by five wickets.
