Harrier Young goes fourth

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

CHILTERN Harriers’ Ali Young was fourth lady home in the gruelling Xiqiao International 24 hour race in China, where extreme temperatures forced many athletes to drop out.

During the day, she had to battle temperatures of 36°C, with 90 per cent humidity, and even the night did not bring cooler weather as the road and buildings radiated heat.

To add to the surreal experience, the course was laid down through a traditional Chinese town movie set in an arts studio.

She said: “I was pleased with the result as I did zero heat training prior to the event, not appreciating what the conditions would be. Some top athletes had to drop out during the event, and although it was far from my 24-hour personal best, I kept steady and continued throughout.”

It completed a fine month for the Amersham athlete, who also found out she has been selected to represent Team GB at October’s European 24-hours Championship in Albi, France.
