Hospice fundraiser three times the fun
RENNIE Grove Hospice Care’s RAF Halton Triathlon event is back on July 31 this year, with an additional Duathlon option for those who would prefer to avoid the swimming.
Gemma Jones is taking part in the Super Sprint Triathlon, consisting of a 300m swim, 23km cycle and 5km run.
She said: “I decided to do the sprint triathlon for Rennie Grove to try and give something back. I lost my amazing dad in October 2008 to lung cancer and he was only 53.
The Rennie Grove nurses provided hospice at home care, allowing my dad to die at home surrounded by his family as he wanted.
“As a Buckinghamshire resident, I think we’re so lucky to have Rennie Grove and unless they’ve touched your life you do not realise the amazing work that they do.”
Rennie Grove Hospice Care provides patients from Bucks and Herts with life-limiting illnesses, palliative and end-of-life care based around them and their families.
This free service is provided to patients on a 24/7 responsive basis, and also includes bereavement counselling for families after the patient has died.
Gemma said: “The Rennie Grove nurses were never intrusive and our family home never at any stage became a clinical environment.
“They were there to support not only my dad, but my mum, brother and me if we needed them.
“Even after my dad lost his battle the Rennie Grove team were still there supporting our family through the darkness of losing that irreplaceable person in your life.
“The regular nurses that supported us attended my dad’s funeral and the continued support through bereavement counselling was accessible for as long as we needed it.”
The charity’s annual running costs are £7.2million and continue to rise as more and more patients are referred.
Rennie Grove relies on the support of people like Gemma for 84 per cent of its funding.
Gemma, from Wooburn Moor, added: “While I’m absolutely petrified about the upcoming triathlon, if it helps to support the work that the whole of the Rennie Grove team do, I’d do it every month as they have made a permanent impression on me and my family’s lives.
She is hoping to raise £500 and the company she works for has said they will double what she raises up to £1,000.
