Amersham Evening Townswomen’s Guild

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - COMMUNITY -

OUR members met on the hottest day of the year so far, and our last before the summer break.

Everyone was encouraged to come up with suggestions for speakers for the next year’s programme as a planning meeting would be held sometime in August.

The Social Studies group had enjoyed a very informative visit about the Chiltern Society with speaker Jane Peel and her associate telling us the history of how the Society started 50 years ago, and now had 7,000 members and 500 volunteers.

The group was responsible for over 650 square miles from Oxford through Bucks, Herts and up to Bedfordshire in the north.

They maintain a huge area of footpaths and cycleways as well as caring for many heritage sites and nature reserves. After watching the beautiful slides of the lovely area we live in, some of us who aren’t already members felt we should join to help with the excellent work they do.

The Out & About group had lunch at Merlin’s Cave in Chalfont St Giles before visiting a very peaceful garden at Beech House in Jordans.

We were made very welcome by the owners and it was another lovely day for our visit.

Our speaker for the evening was Lynne Bradley, a very charismatic lady, who told us some of her very varied life style as well as tales from behind the scenes of some great films.

Lynne’s talk was interspersed with lots of songs and some poetry, including songs like “My Favourite Things (with different words!)” and “I could have danced all night” after telling us some not always nice stories about the making of My Fair Lady and it’s star Rex Harrison.

Lynne started her career as a ballet dancer, and continued up to the age of 36 when her Swedish partner Sven, dropped her and she dislocated both knees. She then had a career as a model and taught dancing, fitting it round her life as a mother of two children.

She now not only gives different talks on aspects of her life, but has written and had published a couple of poetry books. A multi talented lady who seems to lead an exciting life. The next main guild meeting will be on Tuesday September 29, when our speaker will be Colin Parrish whose subject will be Illegitimate Royals.

We meet at the Royal British Legion Hall at 8pm new members always welcome.
