Midfield trio aiming to add some sting to Wasps

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

NEW Chalfont Wasps manager Gareth Williams has put together two squads virtually from scratch – but it is a trio of midfielders he is most excited about.

Alex Cairns, who helped Burnham to the Southern League Central title three years ago, has joined along with Josh Urquhart, who also has Southern League experience with Leighton Town. Tom Fifield, an attacking midfielder from Holmer Green, where Williams was previously reserve team manager, has also signed and is expected to provide a goal threat.

Alongside them in the middle of the park will be Wasps veteran Ryan Sweales, who had a spell in the dugout at The Nest last season and will wear the captain’s armband this term.

Williams said: “It’s been tough trying to put two squads together, as we’re bringing back the reserve team too, and we’ve been doing a lot of looking at different players and partnerships. We’re doing okay, but it might take some doing.

“We’re still whittling it down into two competitive squads, but six pre-season friendlies isn’t enough to tell where we are. Pre-season has been up and down, and there are still things to look at, so we don’t want to set any expectations.”

Williams’ new job sees a return to the Hellenic League for the former Penn & Tylers Green player after a number of years away in the Spartan South Midlands League with Holmer Green.

He added: “I know most of the Hellenic teams from my time playing for Penn, but there are a few new ones to me.”

Wasps get their new Division One East campaign under way on Saturday with a trip to one of those unfamiliar teams, Sandhurst Town, who have moved over from the Combined Counties League.

Reigning Division One East champions Penn & Tylers Green also start their season aaginst a new Hellenic club, hosting AFC Aldermaston, who were promoted from the Thames Valley League.

Over in the Spartan South Midlands, new Chesham United Reserves boss Mani Asare’s reign got off to a losing start with a 4-3 reverse against his former club, Southall, in Division One.

Callum Woodcock netted twice and Charlie Brooks once for Chesham, who visit Broadfields United on Saturday. Amersham Town get their Division Two campaign under way at Pitstone & Ivinghoe on Saturday.
