Middle order recovery not enough to save CSP 2s from 8 wicket defeat

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

A MIDDLE order recovery was not enough to prevent Chalfont St Peter 2s going down to a heavy defeat by tabletoppers Cookham Dean 3s on Saturday.

Opting to bat, Chalfont got off to a terrible start, falling to 14-3 before Asif Ahmed (24) and Murray Scott (59) dug in and put on 65 to repair the innings.

Justin Weller (61no) then guided the tail to what appeared to be a competitive 177-8 on a wicket with variable bounce, but after a slow start, Cookham’s reply accelerated smoothly.

No Chalfont bowler was able to stem the runs, and on a day when all mishits fell into gaps, and despite much playing and missing, Cookham cruised home by eight wickets.

There was better news for Chalfont’s first team, however, who beat Chiswick & Whitton 3s by four wickets in Division 5a.

Chris May put in a real captain’s performance for Chenies & Latimer in Division 2a, taking 3-38 as Finchampstead 2s were bowled out for 252, before top scoring with 50 as his side held on for a draw at 174-7, but his side remain bottom of the table.

Also battling the drop are Beaconsfield, who slipped back into the Division 2a relegation zone with a six-wicket defeat to Hurst, despite a half century from Chris Thomas (56).

Good performance: Justin Weller scored 61no but it wasn’t enough to save Chalfont St Peter
