GOLDEN OLDIES JOIN SAINTS
THEY may have a combined age of 75, but Chalfont St Peter boss Danny Edwards is hoping his new midfield duo will provide the experience needed for another title tilt.
Edwards has brought former Saints star Davis Haule back to the club after two years away with Aylesbury, the 41-year-old entering his 17th year on the local non-league circuit.
The Saints boss has also signed Byron Bubb, who has a string of non-league clubs on his CV as long as Haule’s, having also made eight professional appearances for Millwall as a youngster.
The 34-year-old is also the brother of Bradley Bubb, who enjoyed two goal-filled seasons with Chalfont a decade ago, before going on to feature in the Football League for Aldershot Town.
Edwards said: “I know Byron through Bradley. We had Bradley for two years and he did very well for us, at a time when Byron was just starting out in pro football.
“He has a good attitude and is a great mentor.
“He has been missing his football and is just enjoying playing again and we can only benefit from having him around.
“Davis was the best player on the park both times we played Aylesbury last season, and his legs are still going strong. He had offers to go elsewhere, but we have a relationship and he will be a strong voice in the dressing room.
“We may not get 45 games out of him, but when he does play he talks other players through the game. If we can get 25-30 games out of him, especially during those tough winter months, he will be pivotal.”
Bubb missed Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup preliminary qualifying round win over Harpenden Town on Saturday which kept Chalfont’s 100 per cent start to the season, while Haule came on as a halftime sub.
Late goals from Adam Kirby and Jake Cass set up a first qualifying round tie at home to Potters Bar Town on Saturday week, before which the Southern One Central leaders visit Arlesey Town on Saturday and host Barton Rovers on Monday.
Edwards added: “There’s nothing more we could have done in the opening few weeks. We were lacking in key areas last season (when Chalfont were in the promotion places for much of it but faded away and did not even make the play-offs), which we’ve looked to address, and we are looking to do better this time round.”
