Springell clinches the double at club’s annual tournament
Singles champion also takes pairs trophy
SUE Springell took the ladies’ top honour at the Chesham Bowls Club’s annual Championships.
Springell got her hands on the Higgs Cup after being crowned singles champion thanks to a 21-6 win over Donna Harvey.
It was one of two crowns for Springell who also won the ladies drawn pairs in partnership with Gillian Henderson, the duo overcoming Jackie Bateman and Fay Green 17-14 in a tight final.
There was double disappointment for Harvey though as she also lost out in the 2-wood singles to Courtney Harvey 16-12.
Jean McNab took the handicap singles, beating June Holland 21-19 in one of the most keenly contested finals of the day.
David Coles was the man with most to celebrate as he scooped not only the 2-wood singles crown, but also the pairs in partnership with Keith Patrick.
Chris Harvey took the big prize as men’s singles champion, beating Richard Free 21-18, while Alan Cohn took the handicap singles honours.
Away from the Club Championship, for a second successive year there was a clean sweep of wins for Chesham bowlers at the Watford & District finals day.
Cohn beat john Holland 21-15 in the Chesham Singles final before, in another all Chesham final, the triple of Howard Cave, Peter Horton and Keith Patrick won 25-12 against David Hobbs, Trevor Bateman and Colin Parsons.
In the Fours, Geoff Denham, David Staples, Alan Cohn and Roy Rodgers won against North Watford 19–14, but in the final pairs match the clean sweep looked in doubt as Howard Cave and John Holland were 14-6 down against North Watford at the halfway stage, only to surge back to win 22-15.
Meanwhile, Ray Keen won the Bucks Officers Cup, played at Iver Heath, beating David Heller of Bletchley Town 21-15 in the final, while the trio of Fay Green, Norman Green and Richard Free won The Chiltern & Thames Mixed Triples thanks to a 17-11 win over a team from Eastcote.
Elsewhere, David Staples and Alan Cohn came up just short in their quest for silverware when losing in the final of the Uxbridge Open Pairs competition.
