Mixed results for Alderton at championships
MIKE Alderton enjoyed a busy if mixed weekend as Chalfont St Giles Bowls Club staged their club championships.
Club captain Alderton got the better of John Pink in both the 2-wood and coveted men’s singles, but came out on the wrong end of the result in three other finals.
Tim Timberlake and Denise Williams deprived Alderton and Hazel Baker the chance to be inaugural winners of the Australian pairs, a trophy instigated in memory of Ros and Norman Clare.
He and partners Bill Bowler and Nick Nicholls also came off second best to Mick Lane, Graham Buchanan and Barry Mills in the men’s triples, while Pink gained revenge for his singles defeats to Alderton when he scooped the men’s pairs, in the company of Allan Rumble.
Club president Staff Burbridge shows no sign of slowing down after he won the club championship at the expense of Rose Kirby, who also lost to Denise Rogers in the ladies singles and missed a third chance of glory when she and teammates Maureen Harding and Tony Batkins came off second best to Morgan Kavanagh, Linda James and Hazel Baker.
This was a second win of the weekend for Baker, who also took the ladies pairs crown in company with Maureen Harding at the expense of Shirley Taylor and Lyn Carroll.
Baker made it a hat-trick of titles when she joined forces with Joyce Cripps and Maureen Burbridge to take the ladies triples.
Carroll meanwhile is no longer a novice having won that title, again at the expense of Pink, but she could not add the mixed pairs crown as she and Buchanan were beaten by Tim and Liz Baldwin.
