Young Harriers take third place at championships
CHILTERN Harriers U15 boys raced to bronze in the South of England Road Relay Championships on Sunday.
The quartet of Angus Williams, Ben Smith, Cameron Reid and Alex Aldred braved a strong wind on the exposed ex-airfield at the new venue of Bedford Autodrome to bring home the medal.
Williams led off and promptly recorded the fifth fastest time of the whole race over the 3km course (8:46) to hand over in second place.
Smith followed up with 9:19 to leave Harriers third as the field began to spread.
Reid (9:27) and Aldred (9:29) then produced gutsy performances to hold their place and make sure of the medal.
While this foursome were the highlight for Harriers there were encouraging displays elsewhere.
The U13 girls were inspired by Orla Williams’ storming first leg of 10:17, the fourth fastest of the race. Alicia Bushell (11:14) and Jinaan Lockwood (11:05) continued the good work to secure 11th overall.
Not to be outdone, the boys’ U13 A-squad of Teague Eaton, Zach Rahaman, Cormac Nisbet and Matt Aldred came 13th – a feat matched by the U17 women’s trio of Scarlett Wager Leigh (10.29), Robyn Watkins (10.41) and Sandie Pohlman (11.27).
The senior men, meanwhile, fielded teams for the first time since 2009 with the A-squad coming a creditable 30th of 59 amongst high quality opposition.
