Defender’s treble denies four-goal striker of match ball
Prize is given to free-scoring centre-back
STRIKER Danny Burnell bagged four goals for Flackwell Heath on Saturday – but still didn’t take home the match ball.
The prized possession instead went to Tom Willment for scoring a hat-trick from centre-back in a 10-0 win over Brackley Town Saints.
Matt Stockhill, Jamie Essex and Jack Thomson-Wheeler also netted in an emphatic win which put the Heathens second in the Hellenic Premier, before Thame United’s midweek win put them in third.
Manager Paul Shone said: “Tom got the match ball for scoring a hattrick from centre-half, as that’s something of a rarity, whereas Dan will get more hat-tricks.
“Okay, we were playing a young side, but you can’t take anything away from the performance. We could have taken it easy and switched off after being three goals up at half time, but we kept going for the throat, which is what serious title chalengers have to do.
“Scoring 10 goals at any level is impressive, and it’s a first for me. We beat Burnham 9-0 earlier in the season, so it will do our goal difference a world of good, and it looks like it will be tight at the top.
“I’m not sure if it’s a record win for the club or not, I’ll be asking some of the older heads around the place, but it sends a message out that we’ve got fight in our side. It was a very good performance, and the players now need to keep that level of performance up.”
The Heathens followed their drubbing of Brackley with a 4-0 win over Highmoor Ibis, which put them into the semi-finals of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy on Tuesday night. Essex added to his goal on Saturday with two more, while Joey Blount also netted, and a Highmore defender put an Adam Morris cross through his own net. Shone’s men now have a weekend off before travelling to Oxford City Nomads next Tuesday.
Down in Division One East, leaders Penn & Tylers Green played out a goalless draw at second-placed Bicester Town, while Chalfont Wasps lost 3-0 at Holyport. Wasps host AFC Aldermaston on Saturday and Penn visit Prestwood in the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup.
