HOLMER GREEN WI
In November Philip Nelcom gave a talk on the History of Scrabble. Philip had worked for a well known games company and had organised several Scrabble championships, becoming National Champion four times.
He told us how the game was invented in the USA in the 1930’s, with little commercial success, until Macy’s store bought up some games and made it famous.
Recent fund raising events include a coffee morning with bring-and-buy and craft demonstrations. All proceeds to go to the Save Denman Appeal.
A successful Friends Evening, which included supper and musical entertainment, provided funds towards a defibrillator for Holmer Green Village.
Our next meeting will be our members only Christmas party, with a buffet and entertainment from the Bob and Dot show. This will be held at the earlier time of 7.30pm on Tuesday December 6 at Holmer Green Village Centre. Members only.
THAMES VALLEY HOSPICE SHOPS
The latest premises in Thames Hospice’s shop portfolio will be officially opened at 2-4 The Broadway, Old Amersham on Friday.
Joining in a day of celebration for the town, with Old Amersham Business Association’s Late Night Shopping Evening from 6pm, the shop will officially open at noon and stay open until celebrations end at 10pm.
Shop staff and volunteers will be joined by Councillor Mark Vivis, a Thames Hospice Ambassador and members of its medical team to cut the ribbon and celebratory cake and there will be refreshments and a glass of bubbly for shoppers.
Julie Rowley, Director of Retail at Thames Hospice, said: “We are delighted to announce the opening of our Old Amersham shop.
“We are very excited to be expanding our Home Studio line and offering our specialist, upcycled furniture and accessories in the new store. The money generated will enable us to care for more people in the local community. We hope you can join us to celebrate our opening.”
The store will stock quality, preloved ladies and men’s fashion, a concession of new bags and accessories and a stunning selection of Christmas decorations, cards and jumpers ahead of the fastapproaching festive season.
There will also be a dedicated Home Studio department, where customers will be able to purchase Frenchic furniture paint and stylish homeware items, upcycled by a creative team of volunteers. Thames Hospice, Old Amersham will open Monday to Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday, 11am-5pm.
