Veteran Stags give young ’uns a lesson

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

CHESHAM Stags hosted their annual Overs v Unders match on New Year’s Eve – pitting the club’s younger players against its older charges.

In previous years, the eagerlyawaited fixture has been between the over-30s and the under-30s, but with so many young players at the club, the age break was reduced to just 26.

The Unders finished the first half with a healthy lead, before experience – or possibly dodgy refereeing – paid off, and the Overs staged a stirring second-half comeback to take the honours 29-24.

Debate over the validity of the winning try raged over post-match pints and the result was reversed when the ladies staged their version of the match afterwards, with the Unders this time coming out victorious.

The men’s firsts return to action on Saturday week, at Alchester in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier, while Drifters make the short trip to Phoenix in the same division.

There was also festive fun over at Beaconsfield, where a Married versus Singles fancy dress match took place on Boxing Day.

The club have presented a cheque for £1,000, raised at a sponsors’ lunch, to the Beaconsfield Round Table, to support the group’s charity work.

Beaconsfield return to Southern Counties North action at Aylesbury on Saturday week while Amersham & Chiltern return to National Three London & SE duties on Saturday, with a trip to Southend (ko 2pm).
