Every Little helps as cup winner adds up to an upset
While Lincoln and Millwall were busy knocking out Premier League sides Burnley and Leicester, Wasps were ensuring their Saturday story had a sting in the tail too.
Nick Little bagged the only goal as the Hellenic League Division One East side knocked Premier Division Ascot United out of the Supplementary Cup.
Manager Gareth Williams said: “We were aware Ascot had just changed managers so it was a good time to play them but we played well and de- served the win – it would be nice to finish the season with a cup run.”
The next round sees Wasps visit Wokingham & Emmbrook next month, before which they have a tough run of league games.
Sitting seventh, Wasps may be too far off the pace to mount a title challenge but they could have a big say in where the silverware goes.
The next four weeks will see them play three of the top four sides in the division, starting at home to Headington Amateurs on Saturday.
Williams added: “It was always going to be a season of two halves – getting the players in and getting the playing together, and then seeing where we can finish. All eyes are on next season now. We’ve got a squad we’re happy with and are starting to add a few more.”
Little’s cup winner came just before half time when he bravely chased a lost cause and challenged a high ball with the onrushing keeper to head home from 16 yards.
Meanwhile, neighbours and league leaders Penn & Tylers increased the gap at the top to eight points after winning 4-1 at Holyport thanks to goals from Casey Bocarro, James Suarez, George Weller and Chris Hurst. They host Bicester Town on Saturday.
Up in the Premier Division, returning hero Joel Jacobs hit a late equaliser on his second debut for Flackwell Heath to earn a 1-1 draw against leaders Bracknell Town.
But the Heathens then crashed 5-0 at new leaders Thame United on Tuesday night. They host Oxford City Nomads on Saturday before travelling to Fairford Town in the Floodlit Cup three days later.
