Rooney and Ronaldo on court

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORTS -

Former world number one James Willstrop and Canary Wharf Classic champion Mathieu Castagnet will take a coaching session with the club’s junior section before going head-to-head on court.

The event has been organised by chairman Peter Dickinson as part of a resurgence in popularity of the sport at the club, said Chesham Bois STC publicity officer Adrian Pearce.

“It’s like having Rooney and Ronaldo coming down to play at Chesham United,” said Pearce, “we’re very lucky to have them coming along. Once we explained how big they are in the squash world, we had some very excited youngsters.

“We have a really active junior section with more than 50 members, which has been built up by the coach Sam Mueller – one of the best over-45 in the country and who is still winning national titles.

“We are hoping [the juniors] will be inspired by having two world-class players coach them before going on to watch them play on the same courts they play on. We also have a strong senior section, with more than 300 members, and have been one of the best clubs in Bucks for years. Squash is having a resurgence, and we’re at the forefront in Bucks. We have a strong presence in the community through coaching in schools.”
