Harriers’ get off to a flyer
CHILTERN HARRIERS’ young endurance runners got their winter season off to a flying start at Crystal Palace on Sunday in the Southern Road Relay Championships.
The highlight were silver medals for the U13 girls team but most age group’s A teams finished in the top 10.
Conditions were poor with heavy rain and several substantial puddles to negotiate on the fast 3.1km circuit of Crystal Palace Park.
The start and finish area was in the Crystal Palace Athletics Track which made for a good atmosphere.
The U13s were off first and Ella Botha (12min 8sec) ran well to bring the A team in seventh. Frankie Baxter (11:51) made up several places to finish in second and Lesedi Nkoane (12:10) maintained that position on leg three.
The B team of Rosa Williams (12:49), Hannah Ashby (12:40) and Maddie Hughes (13:35) were 20th and the C team of Marea Logan (12:53), Ellie Shield (13:38) and Roxy McLellan (14:22) were 34th from a total of 56 complete teams.
The U13 boys A team was made up of first years, so they did well to finish in eighth place from the 44 complete teams. Leon Doran (11:32) led off, followed by Max Baxter (11:52), Euan Pinder (11:47) and Rowan Gawne (12:01). The B and C teams also did well, coming 24th and 29th respectively. The B team consisted of Archie Pinder (12:18), Alfie Clifford (12:18), Alden Collier (12:28) and Sammy Bennetts (12:40) and the Cs were Jamie Powell (12:41), Oakley Denson (12:01), Isaac Jessop-Tranter (12:28) and James Van Der Zwart (13:35).
The U15 girls performed excellently with the A team fifth and the B team 12th from 67 teams. For the A team, Abbie Henderson (11:35) led off and Holly Henderson (11:53) moved the team up to second. Orla Williams (11:46) struggled with a stitch but held on for fifth.
The B team of Alice Brown (11:58), Alicia Bushell (12:00) and Jinaan Lockwood (12:28) showed the strength in depth the club have in this age group this year.
The U15 boys fielded two teams, with lots of inexperienced athletes, so the A team finish of 13th and B team placing of 21st from 42 teams was impressive.
For the A team, Louis Peterson ran excellently for fifth on leg one in 10:16. Finn O’Brien (11:10), Charlie Stone (11:15) and Matt Aldred (11:31) completed the team. The B team was made up of Jamie Carruthers (11:09), Woody Jackson (11:24), Ben Jackson (11:11) and Laurie Gawne (11:28).
The U17 men have a good squad this year and the A team finished fifth, the best performance the club have achieved in this competition
They ran a much longer 4.8km course than the younger age groups.
Alex Aldred (15:55), Tommy Davies (5:58), Cameron Reid (16:38) and Angus Williams (16:27) made up the team.
The B team of Alex Johnson (16:18), Tom Hunter (18:10), Matt Clifford (17:55) and Thomas Job (19:10) were 28th. Soraya Lockwood Ran 13;01 as a solo U17 woman.
