PLANT OF THE WEEK
I spotted this lovely French marigold in full bloom this week and loved its exuberant red petals, outlined in yellow.
It’s part of the Disco series of marigolds which are bred in intense colours including mahogany red, yellow and bi-colours. Tagetes is a halfhardy annual which you sow in spring under cover at a temperature of 21°C. It flowers in summer and will keep going until next month at least.
It has good drought tolerance, single flowers attract beneficial insects and the roots are thought to repel root attacking nematodes making it a good companion for your veg patch.
