MP got the lottery ball rolling in 1991

Burton Mail - - News -

SIR Ivan Lawrence was Burton MP from February 28, 1974 to May 1, 1997. He took over from Tory John Jennings, who had represented Burton from 1955 until his retirement in 1974.

Sir Ivan lost his seat to Labour’s Janet Dean when Tony Blair won the General Election in 1997. She did not stand in the 2010 election when Mr Griffiths was first elected and the seat became Tory again.

Sir Ivan was chairman of the Government’s Home Affairs Select Committee from 1992 to 1997 and chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s UK branch from 1995 to 1997.

He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee from 1982 to 1992, and served on several other Parliamentary Committees concerned with health, employment, social services and law and order.

His Private Members’ Bill in 1991 instigated the National Lottery.
