15 The Daily Telegraph Monday 29 June 2020 ** Sport McIlroy falters as Johnson triumphs Queally handed seven-day ban for striking rival By James Corrigan GOLF CORRESPONDENT By Marcus Armytage Rory McIlroy has blamed “dumb mistakes” for his three-week run in the PGA Tour comeback yielding no top-10s. The world No1 is now ready to take off an extra week than first planned to fix the malaise. McIlroy posted a 67 in the final round of the Travelers Championship at Hartford, Connecticut, to reach 13 under and ensure a top-20 finish that bettered his 32nd at Colonial in the opening tournament after the three-month hiatus and then a 41st at Harbour Town on the previous Sunday. Yet without a couple of sloppy early bogeys and then a double-bogey on the 17th, it would have been so much more appealing. And that sums up not only his week, but his return following the lockdown. “It’s frustrating,” McIlroy said. “Again, there’s been some really good stuff in there, but just some really stupid mistakes. It’s too up and down, a little bit roller-coasterish, where it didn’t really feel like that before we stopped [because of the pandemic]. “It was quite consistent before, when I was building rounds nicely – a lot of pars, a few birdies and not many mistakes. My decision-making was terrible the last few days; just some stupid shots and trying to take too much on at times. Dumb mistakes I don’t usually make.” He chipped in on the first, but bogeyed the second and the fourth. From there he turned into the McIlroy Tom Queally, who partnered the great Frankel throughout his 14race unbeaten career, received a seven-day suspension from the Lingfield stewards on Saturday night after striking a fellow jockey with his whip in the later stages of a race. Queally was riding My Brother Mike in the Betway Heed Your Hunch Handicap on the all-weather track. His mount had been travelling well, but his progress appeared to be held up in the straight by Pioneering, ridden by Hector Crouch, who had made the running before fading back along the rail. Queally eventually got through a gap but, out of apparent frustration, caught Crouch a smack with his whip as he went past. My Brother Mike finished eighth, one place in front of Pioneering, but at the subsequent inquiry into possible interference Queally’s indiscretion was spotted by the stewards and he was given a ban. Speaking yesterday, Crouch said: “I don’t think there was anything malicious about it. Tom’s a good friend of mine.” Queally, who was back in the winner’s enclosure on Equiano Springs at Newmarket yesterday, has the right to lodge an appeal against the suspension before Wednesday. Making a splash: Rory McIlroy’s charge at the Travelers Championship was halted when he landed in the lake on the penultimate hole we have become accustomed to, playing the next 12 holes in six under, with a wedge from 122 yards to two feet on the seventh, a 35-footer eagle on the 13th and a holed bunker shot on the par-three 16th. However, on the 17th, McIlroy unwisely went for the green from a fairway bunker and hit it too fat and watched in despondency as it landed in the lake. Mentally, the 31-year-old is clearly fatigued and it is understandable that he is favouring taking a break until the Memorial in Ohio in a fortnight’s time. “I’ve been frustrated on the course the last three weeks, not being in contention and it sort of sucks going off in the middle of the pack on a Sunday, knowing you don’t really have a chance,” McIlroy said. “So a couple of weeks at home maybe – just reset and start again.” Further down the field, England’s Paul Casey enjoyed a satisfactory return with a 10-under total following a 68, while countryman Ian Poulter shot a 69 for two under. They had all departed through the gates when the dreaded horn sounded, with Dustin Johnson enjoying a two-shot lead with three to play over fellow American Kevin Streelman, with rank outsider Will Gordon in the clubhouse a further shot behind on 17 under after a 64. Storms were forecast, so goodness knows why the Tour did not elect to bring forward the tee-times, even if only by an hour or so. However, when they came back out, Johnson held his nerve to clinch his 21st PGA Tour win, finishing with 67 for a total of 261, which was 19 under and one shot ahead of Streelman. 2.45 Time Scale Concessions 4 Distinction (2) 5 Mister Allegro (8) 6 Topper Bill (13) 7 Wor Willie 8 Shesaheart S.P. f’cast: 6-4 8-1 Rhona Pindar 1 J Fanning 4 B McHugh 6 P Mulrennan 7 A Elliott 5 7-1 116/8 Ivors Involvement (9) S.P. f’cast: 2-1 9-2 10-1 C Murtagh 7-1 16-1 11 9 Intense Style 10-75 Quduraat 1159- Gulland Rock S.P. f’cast: 3-1 8-1 [P](9) (D) P McEntee 8 8 12 [H,P](18) M Appleby 4 8 9 [P](212) (CD)(D) A Carson 9 8 9 Maid Millie, The Right Choice, Fard, Quduraat, Hi Ho Silver, N Garbutt 9 L Morris 4 S W Kelly 6 11-2 12-1 4 Kennocha 5 Lunar Deity (18) 6 Spanish Mane (19) 7 Limerick Lord S.P. f’cast: 3-1 6-1 [T](22) (D) Miss Amy Murphy 4 9 3 (CD)(C)(D9) S C Williams 11 8 10 (C)(D) Miss J Feilden 5 8 5 [P](126) (D) Miss J Feilden 8 8 2 Kennocha, Catch My Breath, Gold At Spanish Mane, Others.
