14 The Daily Telegraph Wednesday 1 July 2020 *** Sport Formula One Drivers to take a knee as Hamilton unites grid Seidl insists McLaren future never in doubt despite £150m loan By Oliver Brown Lando Norris, the 20-year-old McLaren driver, indicated that the time had come for drivers to show a united front. On the subject of taking a knee, he said: “If we are going to do it, we should all do it as a grid. It will be discussed after the drivers’ briefing with the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association on Friday. We will do whatever we can to show we care and respect everyone. We will do what is right when the time comes.” As at Mercedes, McLaren will carry the “End Racism” message on their cars this season. “I want to do better than any other driver, but everyone should be given the same opportunity and treated the same,” Norris said. “It is not fair that people get treated differently because of their race. “This sport reaches millions of people and the more we can do as drivers, teams, and as a community, the bigger impact we can have.” With F1 preparing to begin a shortened championship with two races in Spielberg, followed by another in Budapest, there is continuing concern over how UK quarantine rules will affect the August double-header at Silverstone. Hungary, from where the vast majority of the paddock will be travelling for the British races, is understood not to be on the Government’s initial list of “air bridge” destinations. CHIEF SPORTS FEATURE WRITER By Oliver Brown In what will be one of the most dramatic collective gestures witnessed in Formula One, all 20 drivers are expected to take a knee on the grid ahead of Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, signalling their support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Discussions are already under way among the drivers to choreograph a memorable show of solidarity, likely to take place just before the formation lap, in the moments when they will line up at the front of the grid for Austria’s national anthem. Formula One has assured all the teams that if their drivers wish to take a knee, it will be with the sport’s full backing. For a sport that usually shies away from overtly political statements, it will mark a stunning break with convention. But in recent weeks, the sport has done more to address inequality than it has managed in decades, with chief executive Chase Carey donating more than £800,000 of his own money to a diversity task force, and world champions Mercedes unveiling an all-black livery for their 2020 cars. World champion Lewis Hamilton has established his own commission, designed to attract more young people from under-represented backgrounds into motor racing. He has also lambasted McLaren’s Formula One future was never in jeopardy from Covid-19, team principal Andreas Seidl claimed yesterday, as a £150 million loan from the National Bank of Bahrain helped to ease months of financial strife brought on by the pandemic. While McLaren have suffered from the loss of revenue from a truncated 2020 season, shedding 70 of their F1 staff, the fresh injection of Middle Eastern capital enables them to remain competitive this year. Their majority shareholder is Mumtalakat, the sovereign wealth fund of Bahrain. The rescue deal is to be used for F1 operations and the company’s supercar division. “It was a tough period for the team,” Seidl said. “The positive news about the funding is an extra boost, an extra motivation for all of us who are focused on what we like to do most and what we do best.” While McLaren have had to impose significant redundancies, such a move also comes in anticipation of the F1 budget cap for 2021, restricting each team to a maximum annual spend of £118 million. “There was never a doubt of McLaren not being on the grid next year,” Seidl said. Making a stand: Lewis Hamilton joined protests as part of the Black Lives Matter movement Bernie Ecclestone as “ignorant and uneducated”, after the former F1 chief argued that “in lots of cases, black people are more racist than white people are”. It is Hamilton’s influence that has proved critical in galvanising the rest of the grid into action. In the first of a series of impassioned Instagram messages this summer, he shamed his fellow drivers for their silence on George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis, saying: “Just know I know who you are, and I see you.” Racecards and results Kempton Novice Stakes (Div 1) Handicap 6 Image Of The Moon [P](11) (CD) S L Keightley 4 9 4 6 Midnight Stripper 7 Moiella S.P. f’cast: 11-10 7-1 D Fentiman 7 K Stott 4 6.10 3.20 8-8 T Easterby 8 11 J Bethell 8 11 Disco Beats, Moiella, Katty D, (5) 1m 4f £3,493 (C) R Beckett 4 9 12 D Elsworth 5 9 12 [H](16) A King 4 9 12 J Gosden 4 9 12 D M Simcock 3 9 7 [B](16) M Botti 3 9 0 C Hills 3 9 0 Sir M Stoute 3 9 0 E Vaughan 3 9 0 W Kittow 3 9 0 Mrs H Main 3 9 0 Media Storm, Hey Gracie, Red Centre, Haste Slowly, Inherent, Carausius, Merry Yarn, Scarborough Castle, Tindrum, Others.
