Veainu signs for Stade Fran­cais af­ter re­ject­ing 25pc re­duc­tion at Le­ices­ter

Telusa Veainu has joined Stade Fran­cais af­ter fail­ing to agree a new con­tract with Le­ices­ter Tigers.

The 29-year-old Tonga in­ter­na­tional was one of six play­ers whose con­tracts ex­pired on June 30 af­ter fail­ing to agree fresh terms over 25 per cent wage cuts, im­posed by the club be­cause of Covid-19. That group also con­tained Eng­land centre Manu Tuilagi, back row Jor­dan Tau­fua, centre Kyle East­mond, prop Greg Bate­man and centre Noel Reid. The Daily Tele­graph re­ported last week that Tuilagi was keen to stay at Le­ices­ter fol­low­ing a “change of heart”, al­though Sale Sharks are also re­port­edly in­ter­ested.

Le­ices­ter have an­nounced sev­eral con­tract ex­ten­sions this week, with Ben White, Tommy Ref­fell, Ge­orge Worth, Jor­dan Olowofela, Sam As­p­land-Robinson and Harry Wells all re-sign­ing. Veainu ainu joined Le­ices­ter af­ter im­press­ing ing at the 2015 World Cup, and went on to score 32 tries in 79 matches, tches, in­clud­ing five in his first st six games for the club. He was also named Le­ices­ter supup­port­ers’ player of the year ear fol­low­ing the 2015-16 seaa­son.

The full-back or wing g will now swap Le­ices­ter r for Paris, with his move e con­firmed on the day y that Stade Fran­cais also so an­nounced the sign­ing of South African lock ck Ger­brandt Grob­ler from om Gloucester.

Grob­ler has played in France w with Rac­ing 92 and also im­presse im­pressed dur­ing a spell with Mun­ster be­fore mov­ing to King Kingsholm. Gloucester also an­nounced the de­par­ture yes­ter­day of as­sis­tant coach Rory Teague. The for­mer Eng­land a as­sis­tant had been h heav­ily linked with the va­cant head coach role at Kingsholm fol­low­ing th the de­par­ture of Jo­han Ack Ack­er­mann, be­fore Gloucester ap­pointed Ge­orge Skiv­ing­ton f from London Ir­ish at the end of Ju June.

Teague w was pre­vi­ously head coach at B Bordeaux-Be­gles and worked with Eng­land as a skills coach un­der Ed­die Jones. Gloucester are set to con­firm Skiv­ing­ton’s coach­ing staff in due course.
