Veainu signs for Stade Francais after rejecting 25pc reduction at Leicester
Telusa Veainu has joined Stade Francais after failing to agree a new contract with Leicester Tigers.
The 29-year-old Tonga international was one of six players whose contracts expired on June 30 after failing to agree fresh terms over 25 per cent wage cuts, imposed by the club because of Covid-19. That group also contained England centre Manu Tuilagi, back row Jordan Taufua, centre Kyle Eastmond, prop Greg Bateman and centre Noel Reid. The Daily Telegraph reported last week that Tuilagi was keen to stay at Leicester following a “change of heart”, although Sale Sharks are also reportedly interested.
Leicester have announced several contract extensions this week, with Ben White, Tommy Reffell, George Worth, Jordan Olowofela, Sam Aspland-Robinson and Harry Wells all re-signing. Veainu ainu joined Leicester after impressing ing at the 2015 World Cup, and went on to score 32 tries in 79 matches, tches, including five in his first st six games for the club. He was also named Leicester supupporters’ player of the year ear following the 2015-16 seaason.
The full-back or wing g will now swap Leicester r for Paris, with his move e confirmed on the day y that Stade Francais also so announced the signing of South African lock ck Gerbrandt Grobler from om Gloucester.
Grobler has played in France w with Racing 92 and also impresse impressed during a spell with Munster before moving to King Kingsholm. Gloucester also announced the departure yesterday of assistant coach Rory Teague. The former England a assistant had been h heavily linked with the vacant head coach role at Kingsholm following th the departure of Johan Ack Ackermann, before Gloucester appointed George Skivington f from London Irish at the end of Ju June.
Teague w was previously head coach at B Bordeaux-Begles and worked with England as a skills coach under Eddie Jones. Gloucester are set to confirm Skivington’s coaching staff in due course.
