This year’s majors will not count for cup points

If a European wins the Masters in November, or either of this year’s other two majors, they will gain no Ryder Cup points for next year’s rescheduled match because the European Tour has frozen the qualification process until Jan 1.

The Tour’s tournament committee voted unanimously for the change, so all points earned so far in the process, which started at last year’s BMW PGA Championship and was paused after March’s Qatar Masters, will still count.

Padraig Harrington, the Europe captain, said: “I feel that players should not feel under pressure to play and therefore the points tables should not apply from now until the end of the year from a schedule that could change further.”

He will stick with three wild-card selections.
