Landmark hat-trick Records forward broke

Goals for Manchester City this season in all competitions – his best-ever scoring return teams and none has looked better playing behind closed doors. They have thrashed Liverpool 4-0, and had successive 5-0 demolitions of Newcastle and Brighton.

Even with the threat of a Champions League ban hanging over the club, Guardiola has not looked or sounded as relaxed for months.

“I will go to sleep because I cannot do anything,” Guardiola said when asked if he was worried City would lose their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which will announce its decision today. “I am confident in our arguments and that next season we will be in the place [in Europe] we won on the pitch this season.”

There is no disgrace in losing to City in this mood, but Brighton were outclassed and still have work to do to be sure of staying up. “The second half wasn’t pleasant for us,” said manager Graham Potter. “But playing Manchester City and Liverpool in four days is a big ask.”
