14 The Daily Telegraph Tuesday 14 July 2020 *** Sport Marcus Armytage O’Briens banned and fined for breach of Covid-19 protocols The gregarious Phillips is even back on a hack and has forsaken the car and big lunches for shanks’s pony. He now walks up his gallops to watch his horses and drinks three litres of water a day. However, his hopes of winning a weigh-off with Sir Anthony McCoy were shattered last weekend. “He was 12st 10lb at Cheltenham the last time I saw him,” Phillips pointed out. “But he’s been riding out again and when he walked in the other day he was back down to 11st 5lb, so I was gutted. I thought being 11st 11lb, I would be lighter than him for the first time in my life.” I had to do a double take at Newmarket on Saturday when I saw the newly svelte Spencer. His career as an amateur jockey was ended by a broken back, so he has done it the hard way – by healthy eating, healthy living and cutting out the lager rather than by exercise, although he says that is next up. He, too, is back riding out. Skelton is on the Amelia Freer diet plan, has been hitting the gym and has started running again. “I had to do a lot of roadwork before I started cantering,” said Skelton, whose Fitbit told him he did 10,000 steps at Southwell on the first day back, when he had 10 runners to saddle. “Keeping it off is the hard bit. Some people say being overweight is due to a slow metabolism, but in my case that’s not the reason – it’s just because I love eating.” Cathedral), local delicacies (sticky toffee pudding for Cartmel, cheese for Leicester) or things synonymous with the place, such as a bucket and spade for Yarmouth and a digger for the former opencast mine Ffos Las. Animal-wise, he has painted a Hereford bull for Hereford, a red deer stag for Exeter, a salmon for Kelso, a seagull for Brighton, an avocet for Fakenham – I do not recall wheeling flocks of them when I rode there but they are specific to Norfolk – and a curlew for Hexham, the other course where he clerks. Curlews are more specific to Hexham than you might imagine. Charles Enderby, the previous owner, was a keen ornithologist and chose the curlew as the course’s emblem, and it is not so long ago that a steeplechase fence had to be bypassed at two meetings one spring because a pair of curlews had chosen it as a site for their nest. Racing Correspondent Armstrong looks at the bigger picture By Marcus Armytage Aidan O’Brien and his son Donnacha, also a Classic-winning trainer, have been banned from Irish race meetings for a fortnight after entering the Curragh by the wrong gate. The pair had completed the necessary paperwork before attending the meeting on June 12, Irish 2,000 Guineas day, but fell foul of the system by failing to enter the course through the Covid-19 health screening area. As well as a ban, they were each fined €2,500 (£2,225). It is further proof of how seriously Irish racing is taking its responsibilities in carrying out racing behind closed doors. In June, Emmet Mullins, another trainer, was fined €5,000 and banned from race meetings for three months for failing to present a mandatory bar code. He was turned away by officials but later seen in the paddock on CCTV before and after a race in which he had a runner. Donnacha’s two-week ban starts immediately while Aidan, who recently became the first trainer in the 241 runnings of the Derby to win the race eight times, with Serpentine, will be banned two weeks from Monday. J ames Armstrong is not far off celebrating 20 years as clerk of the course at Newcastle and, since racing has been back, his racecourse has been one of the busier ones. But, apart from instigating one-way systems, overseeing a new jockeys’ changing room in the Colonel Porter (inventor of Newcastle Brown Ale) Grandstand and adding the dots in the paddock for social distancing, Armstrong made pretty good use of time during lockdown to indulge in his hobby – painting. A pencil, ink and watercolour man, he managed to complete a commission of a black Labrador for friends, waiving the fee because it had taken him 2½ years (about 17 in dog years). But, more pertinent to this column, he also took the time to produce an illustrated map of British racecourses. Weatherbys has printed an edition of 300 and Armstrong is hoping to raise a few quid for the National Health Service, Racing Welfare and his own new paintbrush fund. Not all racecourses have made the cut for an illustration, but some are of the famous horses to have graced them, local landmarks (Scone Palace for Perth, Salisbury L ockdown has been good for some and, between them, the trainers Richard Phillips, Richard Spencer and Dan Skelton have lost the equivalent of a decent-sized jump jockey in weight. They are all lesser men than they were. In descending order, Phillips has lost 4st, Spencer has lost 3st and Skelton 2st, and they are all feeling a lot better for it.
