Calls for con­cus­sion sub­sti­tutes

Foot­ball has been urged to im­me­di­ately in­tro­duce tem­po­rary con­cus­sion sub­sti­tutes, af­ter tri­als for a po­ten­tial law change were de­layed following the out­break of coro­n­avirus. Eric Bailly’s head in­jury against Chelsea on Sun­day in­ten­si­fied the spot­light on foot­ball’s con­cus­sion pro­to­cols and, al­though Manch­ester United’s med­i­cal staff have been praised for their “ex­em­plary care” – with Bailly re­leased from hos­pi­tal yes­ter­day – cam­paign­ers have called for a law change that could have given doc­tors more as­sess­ment time ear­lier in the game.
