Teenager tribute Midfielder’s shirt retired… after just 44 games
Jude Bellingham will be remembered with affection by Birmingham City fans but even they were startled to discover that the club had retired the 17-year-old’s No 22 shirt ahead of a move to Borussia Dortmund.
The news was met with light-hearted disbelief on social media given that the teenager had made only 44 appearances, scoring four goals, yet was awarded the kind of tribute normally reserved for club legends.
Birmingham said they hoped the gesture would inspire the next generation, with Bellingham having joined the club aged seven.
“The 22 shirt has become synonymous with Jude, his rise to the first team aged just 16 years and 38 days,” a statement read. “As such the club have decided it would be fitting to inspire others.”
