Big-race verdict Marlborough’s horse-by-horse guide

The Daily Telegraph - Business - - Sport -

Deirdre

Globetrotting Japanese mare who took this race last year. Needs a strong gallop to be seen at her best; if she gets it, she can prove to be a major threat to all.

Lavender’s Blue

Useful filly who has so far shown her best form at a mile. Drying ground will help, but the step back up to 1m2f does not look an obvious move.

Magic Wand

Record at 10 furlongs reads 3222224124, with eight of those coming at Group One level. Wonderfully consistent mare who must be in the frame here.

Nazeef

Winner of six of her seven career starts, most recently when narrowly winning the Group One Falmouth Stakes. Tries 1m2f for the first time; respected.

Queen Power

Consistent filly who has done little wrong in seven career starts to date, but has continued to come up just short in Group company. Place chance at best.

Fancy Blue

Last-time-out Group One Prix de Diane winner for Donnacha O’Brien. A 9lb weight allowance from her elders makes her the one to beat.

One Voice

Has been unlucky on each of her past two starts. Will need some better luck at a course where traffic can easily be found; each-way chance.

Verdict

With no obvious pace angles, this year’s renewal could be tactical and play into the hands of Fancy Blue, who gave Donnacha O’Brien a first Classic winner with just his second winner on turf. The admirable Deirdre looks sure to give another good account of herself, and is taken to chase the selection home, with Magic Wand and One Voice set to fight for the minor honours.

Pedigree: Fancy Blue (centre) wins the Prix de Diane
