Premiership Rugby has marked the return of top-flight action by adorning the pitch at Twickenham with images of three of the highest-profile players who will feature in the remaining matches this season – Chris Robshaw (Harlequins, far left), Maro Itoje (Saracens, middle) and Faf de Klerk (Sale).

British artist John Lundberg oversaw the massive portraits, employing eight helpers who took more than 24 hours to complete the artwork (above). They used a grid comprising 13,420 elements and 1,280 litres of biodegradable pitch marker paint and their work will be visible to passengers on planes flying in and out of Heathrow airport.

The season resumes tomorrow evening when Harlequins play host to Sale at the Stoop, which is just 200 metres away from the national stadium.
