One in, one out Djokovic to play in grand slam but Andreescu withdraws
Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will play at the US Open, but reigning women’s champion Bianca Andreescu has pulled out.
Djokovic will follow his old rival Andy Murray to New York, meaning at least two active slam champions should be in the men’s draw.
But with Rafael Nadal already a refusenik, the exit of Andreescu means the tournament has lost both defending champions.
The Canadian missed the early part of the season with a knee injury and said: “Unforeseen challenges, including the Covid pandemic, have compromised my ability to prepare”.
