Another name for replacements

We have had “finishers” and “gamechangers” and, while announcing their match-day squad to face Saracens, Bristol Bears brought us “system players”.

Some groaned at the jargon. But, as with most of Pat Lam’s methods, the phrase makes sense. Bristol are a cohesive unit. Their flowing phase-play was nowhere near its best, but they beat the champions thanks to perseverance and grit.

Harry Thacker, Kyle Sinckler and Ben Earl all came off the bench and made an impact. Lam will rely on his entire squad as the title challengers sprint to the finish. Juggling match-day 23s is a skill.
