Lon­don Ir­ish sign Eng­land Sevens spe­cial­ist Nor­ton

Lon­don Ir­ish have con­firmed the sign­ing of Eng­land Sevens star Dan Nor­ton on a short-term con­tract.

Hav­ing scored 354 tries and ap­peared in 459 matches for his coun­try, Nor­ton holds two all-time World Rugby Sevens Se­ries records.

The 32-year-old, an elec­tric fin­isher who won a sil­ver medal with Team GB at the Rio Olympics four years ago, has also rep­re­sented Eng­land in three Com­mon­wealth

Games in 2010, 2014 and 2018. But he be­gan his ca­reer as a prod­uct of Glouces­ter’s academy and rep­re­sented Mose­ley and Bris­tol in the 15-a-side game.

“I am re­ally look­ing for­ward to get­ting started with Lon­don Ir­ish and for the op­por­tu­nity to go back to the for­mat I played at grass-roots level,” Nor­ton said.

Nor­ton had been train­ing with the Ex­iles this sum­mer. The Daily

Tele­graph un­der­stands that he has signed a con­tract with Ir­ish un­til the end of this sea­son.

Mean­while, Sale Sharks will meet Har­lequins in the Premiershi­p Rugby Cup fi­nal on Mon­day, Sept 21. The first tro­phy of the 2019-20 English do­mes­tic cam­paign is to be de­cided at the AJ Bell Sta­dium with a 7.45pm kick-off. Premiershi­p Rugby has squeezed the game into the crowded cal­en­dar on the day af­ter the Euro­pean quar­ter-fi­nals week­end.
