BlackBerry brand to be revived by release of 5G model in 2021

THE BlackBerry phone brand will return from the dead next year when an American business releases a new 5G model with a physical keyboard.

Texas business OnwardMobility announced yesterday that it is preparing to release a smartphone under the BlackBerry brand, which it hopes to sell to government and enterprise customers, rather than typical retail customers. The announcement comes after BlackBerry’s previous agreement with Chinese phone business TCL expired earlier this year following a continued slump in sales, bringing an end to four years of BlackBerrybranded Android smartphones.

TCL’s exclusive use of the BlackBerry brand expires at the end of the month, clearing the way for a new partner. OnwardMobility’s BlackBerry is expected to be released in the first half of 2021, although little information has so far been made public.

The smartphone will use a design created by OnwardMobility, rather than a previous BlackBerry design, and will run on Google’s Android system.
