Veteran Silva to join Chelsea on a free transfer
Thiago Silva is expected to complete a move to Chelsea after playing his final game for Paris St-Germain.
Defeat in the Champions League final to Bayern Munich last night is due to be followed by the 35-yearold finalising his free transfer to Stamford Bridge, after his contract with PSG ran out and no new deal was offered.
The Daily Telegraph revealed last week that Chelsea were interested in signing the Brazil international and that talks had taken place. Silva is likely to agree a two-year deal with Frank Lampard keen to add his experience to a Chelsea defence he is overhauling during this transfer window. Left-back Ben Chilwell is expected to follow in a £50million move from Leicester City.
Silva, who has been at PSG for eight years after joining from AC Milan, is now a free agent and while he turns 36 next month, he has attracted interest from a number of big clubs in England and Italy.
He has been regarded as one of the world’s best centre-halves for many years and, although he is older, he will bring presence and leadership to a Chelsea defence that conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season.
Silva is expected to agree to a significant cut in his wages – he has been earning £1.3million a month as PSG captain – but is determined to play in the Premier League before the end of his career.
