Abuse claims made against top GB coach

Britain’s top women’s gymnastics coach has been dragged into the sport’s abuse scandal amid claims she had been the subject of a number of complaints over several decades.

ITV News also alleged yesterday that Amanda Reddin, who is due to take charge of Team GB’s women at next year’s postponed Olympics, was at the centre of two cases that were still under investigation.

The network reported that a former gymnast had been told by British Gymnastics that a complaint she submitted against Reddin earlier this year, but which related to historic matters, had not been upheld.

Her allegations were said to focus on a four-year period in the mid-to-late 1980s, starting when the gymnast was nine years old and Reddin was a coach at the Brighton Gymnastics Club.

ITV said it had obtained a detailed letter from British Gymnastics responding to various claims of fat-shaming, slapping and shouting, which read: “It was not possible to substantiate the allegations based on the time passed.”

It was also said to state that “there are no other current complaints regarding Amanda Reddin”.

Responding to accusations that further complaints had been made against Reddin, the governing body said: “We will make no further comments on individual complaints being received. We had previously received a complaint and this was dealt with through our employment process prior to this email response.”

Reddin told ITV News in a statement: “I completely refute the historical claim, and the investigation by British Gymnastics did not uphold the complaint.”

She added: “I complete refute these claims. It is wrong that my reputation within the sport that I love is now subject to a trial by media rather than through the proper processes.

“I would welcome the allegations being submitted to the independent review into alleged abuse in gymnastics to ensure the integrity of the process is protected for both athletes and coaches.”

Reddin, who has not been suspended, was awarded an OBE in 2013 for services to sport.

The independent review into allegations British gymnasts had been bullied, beaten and starved taking part in the sport is scheduled to be launched in the next week.
