Chelsea complete Silva free transfer
Thiago Silva has completed his move to Chelsea, the Brazilian international defender has signed a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months that can be exercised by either party at the end of the forthcoming season.
Silva, who will be 36 next month, was a free agent after his contract with Paris St-Germain ran out following the Champions League final on Sunday. PSG confirmed his departure, with the player completing a medical in Milan before signing his Chelsea contract.
There have been suggestions that Silva might be installed as Chelsea captain, but it is understood this will not be the case, partly due to his limited English. He will fly to London today to begin a 14-day period of isolation before joining up with the Chelsea squad.
Silva won seven league titles in France after signing from AC Milan and is determined to carry on playing at the top level, targeting the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the PSG chairman and chief executive, said: “Thiago (Silva), thank you for eight years of unforgettable memories, leadership and commitment. You are one of the greats.”
Silva had already said his farewell to PSG fans in a social media post on Wednesday. “Today a cycle ends. I would like to thank the team... for all these happy moments in the city of light,” he said.
