The Daily Telegraph Tuesday 1 September 2020 ** 15 Marcus Armytage ECB to launch review in wake of Bushell departure from Jockey Club By Jeremy Wilson CHIEF SPORTS REPORTER Cricket board seeks talks over claims against director Jockey Club only in September 2019, worked previously at BT Sport and Sky, and is also a nonexecutive director at the ECB and Commonwealth Games England. She is also on the advisory board of Telegraph Media Group. The ECB will now seek talks with Bushell and the Jockey Club. “We do not underestimate the seriousness of the claims made against Delia, but we will seek to review and discuss what is clearly a complex matter with both her and the Jockey Club before commenting further,” a spokesperson said. Commonwealth Games England said that it “will not make any further comment until we have reviewed the situation”. Last night, the Jockey Club said it had not heard anything from Bushell’s lawyers to suggest legal action was imminent. It appeared to believe it was an open-and-shut case. But few people in racing believe this is the last they will hear of it. In her resignation letter, Bushell also said that the barrister did not uphold the bullying complaint, or another 15 of 22 allegations, and stressed that she did not accept the other findings. “Given the toxicity of the working environment I find myself in, the predetermination of the disciplinary and the clear and ongoing threats to my reputation, I have no choice but to accept the repudiatory conduct described in this letter and to resign with immediate effect,” she said. Bushell became the first female head of the Jockey Club when she was recruited to replace Simon Bazalgette last year. She was the subject of a formal complaint by a senior colleague and, following an investigation, was told by the Jockey Club’s board of stewards of their decision to dismiss her. “The board of the Jockey Club announces today that Delia Bushell is to stand down as group chief executive with immediate effect,” Sunday’s statement read. “This follows the completion of an independent review into a wide range of allegations about her conduct, which the board concluded made it untenable for her to continue. “As part of the review, an independent barrister interviewed 19 witnesses, including Delia. He submitted a detailed report to a subcommittee of the board comprising Dido Harding, Julia Budd and Justin Dowley on Sunday Aug 23, in which he concluded there was evidence to support the allegations of misconduct.” Nevin Truesdale, group chief financial officer, will take over as interim chief executive. Commonwealth Games England also plans probe The England and Wales Cricket Board and Commonwealth Games England are to launch separate reviews after allegations of bullying behaviour and inappropriate racist comments were made against their non-executive director, Delia Bushell, during her role as chief executive of the Jockey Club. Bushell, who denies the accusations, resigned on Sunday after the Jockey Club reported that an independent barrister had “concluded there was evidence to support the allegations” and a subcommittee of the Jockey Club decided that there was a basis for disciplinary action on grounds of gross misconduct. In her letter of resignation, Bushell said that concerns had been raised to her about the barrister’s “lack of impartiality” and she described the complaint process as “fundamentally mishandled”. She also said that she had been subjected to “unmerited, dishonourable, bullying behaviour” from within an organisation that is “deeply resistant to change”.
