First set Nishioka wins 6-4

First blood to Andy Murray as he wins the first game on serve, although it lasts more than five minutes. Yoshihito Nishioka saves two break points to level at 2-2 and makes the first break of the match to go 4-3 up, eventually winning the set 6-4.

Second set Nishioka wins 6-4

Murray’s first-serve percentage was down at 41 per cent in the first set and he double faults twice at the start of the second set to give Nishioka an early break. Nishioka races to a 4-0 lead and although Murray fights back, the Japanese closes out the set at 6-4.

Third set Murray wins 7-6

As in the second set, Nishioka gets the early break after Murray’s sixth double fault of the match. Nishioka goes to 3-1 but Murray claws his way back to 3-3. The Scot nudges ahead to 6-5 after saving three break points. The set goes to a tie-break which Murray wins 7-5.

Fourth set Murray wins 7-6

The set goes on serve until Nishioka reaches match point but Murray hangs on to take the battle to another tie-break. The momentum looks to be with Murray now and he wins the tie-break 7-4.

Fifth set Murray wins 6-4

Murray saves break point to hold at the start of the set but is broken in the fifth game as Nishioka goes 3-2 ahead. Amazingly, Murray breaks straight back, which seems to sap the confidence of his opponent, and Murray wins the match as Nishioka’s jumping backhand to a lob goes long.
